Louis is famously quoted saying "L'etat, c'est moi" which roughly translates to "I am the state". Even though it is likely he never said this, it is a saying used by many to summarize his rule/reign. In this situation "state" means the government.

Machiavelli's The Prince is a secular humanistic work from the Renaissance. The purpose was to give advice to rulers on how to gain and hold onto power.

One of your answers to the crossword puzzle from the Muslim Contribution assignment was the 1001 Nights (sometimes called the Arabian Nights). The story of Aladdin comes from this collection of stories and you'll hear Genie reference this is the song Friend Like Me. 
In this collection of stories King Shahraya marries a different woman every night only to put her to death in the morning. He does this because he found out his first wife was cheating on him,  had her killed, and now doesn't trust any women. He thinks it is better to marry them then have them killed the next morning before they can be unfaithful. To delay her death, one wife, Princess Shahrazad, tells the king a story each night but withholds the ending until the following day. The tales continue for over a thousand nights, a total of almost three years. By that time, King Shahrayar has decided that Shahrazad doesn't deserve death and they live happily ever after (depending on the version you read).

Suleyman the Magnificent (as he is known to Western historians) had an interesting and complicated life. But does he deserve to be called "magnificent"? What qualities should we look for in someone with that title? Here's what we are going to do today:
1. Using the Suleyman Reading doc, complete the Suleyman the Magnificent Google Form. Be sure to read the answer feedback for each question after you finish. It will help you to understand the story of the Magnificent(?) individual.
2. In the Google Doc, complete parts II & III. This is where you determine the good and bad things the man did, then decide if he really is "the Magnificent". Be sure to use specific information to support your position!
3. Submit with your parts II and III document attached.

Muslims have made many, many contributions to our modern world. This is where you do a little reading about those contributions. Here's what you need to do...
1. Complete the Muslim Contributions Google Form. Guess which things were introduced by Muslims scholars then submit (be sure to look at results when you finish). No need to look anything up, you are just guessing here.
2. Use the Chapter 6-4 readings (and notes you have) to complete the crossword puzzle. Once you finish it, show me your completed puzzle then "print" it to Google Drive, saving it in a folder called "World Cultures" or wherever you save files for this class. These are you notes. Upload it here as well.
3. Finally comment on this assignment (private comments not public) which contribution you think has had the biggest impact on our world.

Use the form below to interview someone who has memories of September 11. This could be an older sibling, relative, or family friend. Who you interview can make a big difference with the answers you receive so consider that when choosing who to interview. Today we are looking at the 5th Pillar of Islam - Hajj. While the title says "Sneaking a camera into Mecca" you can bring a camera to Mecca. Taking them to holy sites is a different matter. I've found that some sources say you can bring a camera/phone if you don't bother people trying to worship, others say you can't and you will be told to put it away. Some said you won't be let in with a camera. No matter the issue, our guide was able to get a camera into the holiest place in Islam during Hajj. 

Watch the video and write a brief summary/reaction in the Google Doc (don't forget to submit). You should answer the following in your reaction: 
What things did you find interesting? Surprising? 
Is there anything like this that occurs in the United States?
What would you find the most difficult thing about going on Hajj if you were Muslim?
Writing a one sentence answer “I found nothing interesting or surprising and nothing like it” will not earn you points. This needs to be at least several sentences long. One could even call it a full paragraph and more!

Finally you can explore Mecca using Google maps. While you may see a lot of poverty in Mecca, there is also a lot of wealth that flows in from across the globe. Check out some of the stores you can shop in or restaurants you can eat at. You might be surprised at the places you can go to / eat at there.

You and a partner have been tasked with creating a digital advertisement for a country in the Middle East. You could create a website using Google or use Padlet, Adobe Spark, or something else you are familiar with. If you choose to use Google Slides you should use transitions, word art, high quality images, and various layouts / designs on each slide.


Be sure to include all of the features / information located in the Google Doc below. Remember you are trying to sell or advertise this country, not just give a factual report. 
Use the Google Form below to choose your country and partner (if you want one). Be aware that if you work alone I still expect a high quality product similar to those working with a partner. 
Have a friend in another class period? You can partner with them if they are in my class. Be sure to make that in the Google Form!
